This is a one page article clipped from an American Rifleman magazine that tells us the history of the "Monkey Tail" Carbine. This gun was the Westley Richards Carbine, Pattern No. 5 manufactured in 1867, often called the "Monkey Tail" because when the top lever was lifted (for loading a paper cartridge) it was thought by many to resemble a monkey's tail. Westley Richards of Birmingham, England was one of the most respected gunmaking firms of the times. The Carbine came along a little to late for its potential in the field to be realized fully by the British anyway, however Portugal who had a long association at the time with Great Britain ordered thousands of the carbine in the 1870's. They are a common sight on the USA collectors market due to the large numbers that were imported into the USA in the 1950's and 1960's by Golden State Arms Pasadena,California at the time costing $24.95. One day these clippings will be gone. As the print periodicals become more scarce so do the wonderful ads and articles that gave life and color to those remembered times. They help us to recall and document past times. They are living reminders of who we used to be. They give us a snapshot in time of style, beliefs, activities and daily life different from our own.
